The Vision

Cyren Call supports the creation of a nationwide, next-generation wireless broadband network for better public safety communications.  The public safety network should include these core principles:

  • Put Public Safety First: Our national telecom policy supposedly gives the public interest and public safety priority over all other communications requirements. But in practice, the average household has more advanced telecommunications options than America ’s first responders, and the gap is growing wider all the time. Public safety should come first.
  • Allocate enough prime spectrum for Public Safety: To date, most public safety spectrum allocations have been small, fragmented, and designed primarily for narrowband voice service. In the future, if public safety is going to have the same kind of robust wireless broadband service that the rest of us will take for granted, then the government will need to ensure that public safety has access to and some control over large blocks of prime spectrum.
  • Give the private sector an economic incentive to optimize the public safety network in terms of coverage, reliability, redundancy and functionality by creating a workable, self-sustaining business model that will stimulate competition and innovation. The private sector and ordinary consumers can and should share in the benefits of a robust public safety network.
  • Fix the problem now, taking advantage of the unique, historic opportunity that arises from the long-planned clearance of some of the nation’s most useful broadcast frequencies between today and 2009.
