Background

The following are among the sources that provide additional, authoritative information on the public safety community’s telecommunications needs:

  • Federal Communications Commission, Report to Congress on Short-Term and Long-Term Needs for Allocations of Additional Spectrum for Federal, State and Local Emergency Response Providers, December 2005.  This report by the FCC staff addresses questions posed by Congress and other interested parties regarding the spectrum needs of America’s first responders.  http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-262865A1.pdf
  • Federal Communications Commission, Eighth Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the Matter of the Development of Operational, Technical and Spectrum Requirements for Meeting Federal, State and Local Public Safety Communications Requirements Through the Year 2010, WT Docket 96-86, March 2006.  In this FCC notice, the Commission seeks comment on whether certain channels within public safety’s current allocation of frequencies in the 700 Megahertz band should be modified to accommodate wireless broadband communications.  This report does not address the need for additional spectrum in the 700 MHz band, but it does provide helpful background information and discussion of relevant issues. http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-06-34A1.doc
